Intermedia Faculty and Students to present in {Re}Happening
This year, the Intermedia program proudly sends a select contingent of graduate students and faculty members to the prestigious art event known as The {Re}Happening. Taking place on the original campus of the historic Black Mountain College, this event is both a celebration of the college’s rich artistic past and an exciting look into a range of contemporary art practices.
Lead by faculty member Gene Felice, eight graduate students and two faculty will present work alongside other fellow artists throughout the event. The students, along with faculty members Owen Smith and Nate Aldritch, will present work as a chance operations group, creating pieces in the moment while utilizing concepts like indeterminacy. The group will present/perform their work within the Boat House.
Although Owen, Nate, and the students will present as a chance operations group, Gene will present singularly as one of the featured artist’s during the event. His work will involve projection mapping onto the surface of the iconic Studies Building, also located near the shore of Lake Eden.

This trip is not only a new and wonderful chance for the Intermedia community to showcase their artistic vision, but also an opportunity for Gene to revisit part of his past. As a previous board member of both the Black Mountain College Museum and the Media Arts Project, Gene was a primary catalyst in the creation of the {Re}Happening. For three years he worked as a the director of the {Re}Happening, although he prefers the title “Lead Instigator,” an acknowledgement that the core of the (Re)Happening is a “…collaborative community art event.” His past role included a myriad of responsibilities, such as curating of the artists, logistical planning, sponsorships, and the organization of PreHappenings, a series of mini events leading up to the {Re}Happening. While these responsibilities filled much of his time, Gene also presented as an artist, with pieces like, Quasi-Equivalence (2011) and Omni Present Orbs (2010). This year, his projection mapping will incorporate live underwater video feeds of Lake Eden, and will also utilize themes of the past, present and future.
