2014 End of Semester Show

The 2014 Fall Semester Student Exhibition was a huge success. Featuring work from New Media, Intermedia, and the Art department, the event provided visitors with the chance to experience a broad array of artistic mediums.

The Intermedia artists involved in the showing were able to present work both finished and in-process, offering visitors a unique look into the creative process. One such artist was Stan Levitsky, a second year Intermedia MFA student. Stan’s piece was unique in that it made use of the excess materials from another, larger project he’d been working on. This recycling and reuse of material not only stood as its own work, but also provided insight into the Katahdin project as well, which is where the materials stemmed from.

Other Intermedia artists such as Chris Bryant, Ozgur Akgun, and Alexander Gross,  presented work that relied on intensive of coding and sensor technology. Bryant’s piece made use of a simple video game design to provide a critical commentary on the war on terror. Akgun and Gross worked together to program a sensor controlled mirror that would ask viewers questions as they approached.

In contrast, artists Kris Mason and Rachel Nelson exhibited work that made use of materials like fabric and concrete and relied on space and interaction with the audience. Mason’s piece was an in process mix of home design and surrealism. Using concrete to build small stools, and a sweater as a base, Mason blended and challenged the functionality and purpose of the different materials he used. Relying also on fabrics, Rachel Nelson created a fantastical space where she used tarot cards and a slide projector to create an individual and unique experience for each participant.

These artists and their fellow peers provided a terrific showing throughout the event. In addition to the artists, a big thank you goes out to Gene Felice for organizing the event, and to Owen Smith and Velma Figgins for providing food and beverages to all those who attended.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
