WITHOUT BORDERS X: RE  August 9 – September 27, 2013

Curiosity compels exploration. As contemporary artists we raise questions and invent solutions and explorations. Rarely navigating toward easy answers, we yearn to be lost in the process, considering every possible perspective. The space between the question and the answer becomes a means to, or a substitute for, a conclusive solution. Creating within this space is inevitably far more satisfying than the transient allure of an easy answer.

For the seven artists, represented in Re, curiosity is not only a choice, but the very essence of our creative practice. The work we present seeks to reframe ritual and identity, reconnect human networks both on and offline, replay human emotions to seek connection, reconsider the visible and invisible threads that surround us, reclaim the once discarded, remember the weight of our grief, and re evoke our spirituality through shared experiences.

The prefix Re can be applied to many words to either indicate repetition, such as in regenerate, or to indicate a backward motion, such as in retrace. We embrace both. Though our creative engagements vary widely, spanning video, audio, performance, installation, found objects and interactive technologies, we share a similarity of process. In the end, each of us have forged our own parallel practices, between research and response, and our curiosity keeps us in a consistent flux between the two.

The Intermedia MFA department at the University of Maine is pleased to present the 10th annual Without Borders Festival. The exhibit runs from August 9 to September 27th, 2013 in the Lord Hall Gallery and features the work of seven graduating MFA students. A public reception is scheduled for Friday September 6th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
