Intermedia MFA Program Announces Spring 2013 Visiting Artist Series

The University of Maine Intermedia MFA program is pleased to announce the artists for the Spring 2013 Visiting Artist Series. Presenting this Spring are Iain Kerr, Ilana Bolvinik, Miranda Clark, Hasan Elahi, Erin Manning, co-author’s Patsy Baudoin, John Bell, and Nick Montfort and Sina Najafi. Each artist will present a public lecture at the University of Maine campus in Orono, Maine.
The six artists for the Spring 2013 Visiting Artist Series will present on their diverse research and art practices that range from, but are not limited to, food works, performance, social activism, computer coding, publishing and curation.
Iain Kerr (January 17) is an artist, writer, and teacher whose work spans the fields of philosophy, architecture, evolutionary ecology, systems theory, emergent creative practices and food works, amongst other things. He is a founding member of the collective spurse.
Ilana Boltvinik (February 19) is a Mexican visual artist focused on inter and transdisciplinary art in which she connects science with anthropology to generate new social dialogues within communities. She joins these aspects with technology, biology, public spaces and trash.
Miranda Clark (February 26) references feminine archetypes found in fairytales, pop culture, and love ballads. Through photography, video, performance, and ongoing investigation, Clark manipulates the ritual standards of desire, fantasy, and consumption.
Hasan Elahi (March 19) is an interdisciplinary artist with an emphasis on technology and media and their social implications. His research interests include surveillance, simulated time, transport systems, and borders and frontiers. (Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture)
Erin Manning (March 26) works between painting, fabric and sculpture in her art practice. Her writing addresses the senses, philosophy and politics, articulating the relation between experience, thought and politics in a transdisciplinary frame work moving between dance and new technology, the political and micropolitics of sensation, performance art, and the current convergence of cinema, animation and new media. Patsy Baudoin, John Bell and Nick Montfort (April 9) are co-authors of the book 10 PRINT that takes a single line of code and uses it as a lens through which to consider the phenomenon of creative computing and the way computer programs exist in culture.
Sina Najafi (April 30) is the Editor-in-Chief at Cabinet Magazine, an award-winning magazine of art and culture, and co-director of Immaterial Incorporated. Najafi has curated or co-curated a number of exhibitions and has taught at Cooper Union, Yale, and RISD. (Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture)
The University of Maine Intermedia department is excited to host this diverse group of artists, as they will undoubtedly appeal to a wide collection of interests of students, faculty and the local community. The public is invited to participate in this lecture series to gain exposure to distinguished and contemporary artists, educationally beneficial engagement opportunities, and interaction with professionals from a variety of cultural and critical backgrounds. All events are free and open to the public.
