MIGUEL GUTIERREZ PERFORMS Saturday November 9th

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. The University of Maine Intermedia MFA program is pleased to announce the fourth presenter, Miguel Gutierrez, for the Fall 2013 Visiting Artist series co-sponsored by the Cultural Affairs/Distinguished Lecture Series. The artist will perform his newest solo work , Heavens What Have I done?, Saturday, November 9 at 7:00 pm in the second floor dance studio, Class of 1944 Hall on the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Miguel Gutierrez, an active member of the New York dance scene since 2001, creates solo and group performances under the moniker Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People. He teaches regularly around the world and is the inventor of DEEP AEROBICS, “the communal/political/conceptual/imaginational workout experience you always wanted but never could embarrass yourself enough to find or do in public.”

Gutierrez’s interest in working with others is related to the questions in his work involving group identity and communal experience. He continues to work in solo form and on smaller scale pieces. Regardless of the size of the project, it is Gutierrez’s goal to create challenging and thought-provoking performance experiences. The work has enjoyed considerable attention in the printed and virtual press. The company is engaged to perform in venues across the country and internationally. Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People have created eight works: enter the seen, I succumb, dAMNATION rOAD Retrospective Exhibitionist and Difficult Bodies, myendlesslove, Everyone, Nothing, No thing, and Last Meadow. Gutierrez is currently doing a residency for his new work And lost the name of action at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN.
